Independent software comparison for solo operators

Jobber vs Housecall Pro for a solo contractor: pricing, features and a five-job test

A one-person handyman, cleaner or pressure-washing operator needs a reliable path from customer request to payment. Jobber and Housecall Pro both sell that workflow, but the right choice depends on the exact plan, billing term and features you will actually use.

· USD regular list prices · Independent desk research, not hands-on testing · No affiliate tracking links

Short answer: Jobber Core lists $49/month on regular no-commitment monthly billing; Housecall Pro Basic lists $79/month on monthly billing. Jobber Core is $30/month less on that comparison. Housecall Pro Basic explicitly advertises an entry-tier price book and job costing, while Jobber places job costing in a higher tier. A lower sticker price does not mean the same capabilities.

At regular list rates, the gap is $30 per month, or $360 across twelve monthly payments. With annual prepayment, the difference is also $360 for a year ($708 minus $348). These are simple subscription calculations, not guaranteed checkout totals. Jobber additionally shows a monthly-payment option with a one-year commitment: do not confuse it with either no-commitment monthly or prepaid annual billing. Introductory offers, taxes, card fees, paid add-ons and third-party accounting subscriptions are excluded.

Both vendors market broad feature sets, but a feature on a product website is not necessarily included in the cheapest tier. Confirm what is in your actual trial and what remains after you downgrade. In particular, a directory of integrations is not proof that a specific integration is free or enabled on Core or Basic.

Which would I trial first?

Try Jobber Core first if your main pain is losing track of customer requests, preparing estimates, scheduling visits or chasing invoices and you do not require built-in job costing on the entry plan. Its lower regular subscription cost leaves more room to justify the purchase with modest administrative savings.

Try Housecall Pro Basic first if you need to maintain a service price book and compare estimated versus actual job costs without moving up to a higher subscription tier. Verify that the costing fields capture your actual materials, travel and labor requirements; a feature label alone does not establish the detail you need.

Compare higher tiers instead if automatic QuickBooks Online synchronization, advanced client follow-ups or multiuser dispatch are non-negotiable. Jobber's public table places accounting sync on Connect, and Housecall Pro's public table places it on Essentials. The prices in the first table no longer describe that purchase.

Keep free tools if your current calendar and invoice worksheet already handle your job volume without missed follow-ups. A subscription is a cost until you demonstrate that it saves time, prevents errors or wins work you otherwise would lose.

How much time must the price difference save?

For an illustrative solo owner who values recovered productive time at $40 per hour, Housecall Pro Basic must save 45 more minutes per month than Jobber Core to offset the $30 regular monthly price difference ($30 ÷ $40 × 60). At $60 per productive hour, the threshold is 30 minutes. These are break-even comparisons between subscriptions, not estimates of what either product actually saves. Do not count time as cash profit unless that time can be turned into useful paid work or meaningful personal time.

Use the free administrative-time calculator to enter your own job count, time saved and monthly software cost. To see whether the base job price supports that overhead, use the minimum job-price calculator. Record any transaction fees separately.

Run the same five fictional jobs in each trial

  1. New inquiry: Create a fictional customer, service address and requested work; measure the number of screens and minutes to log it.
  2. Estimate: Build a quote with labor, materials, travel and an optional change; check mobile editing and customer approval flow.
  3. Schedule: Book the job, reschedule it and inspect the customer notification or booking link. Do not send real messages to invented recipients.
  4. Invoice and costs: Convert the estimate to an invoice, record a simulated payment and inspect any available job-cost view. Do not process a real charge for the test.
  5. Exit test: Export customers, jobs and invoices; inspect the actual renewal price, cancellation method and what data remains accessible after cancellation.

Score each platform against the same tasks using our free interactive five-task scorecard and CSV export. Test on a phone in the field, not only a desktop at home. We have not opened accounts or performed this test ourselves.

Three practical solo-contractor scenarios

Handyman doing eight jobs per month: Start with the free handyman estimate worksheet. If the main problem is simply generating quotes, compare Core and Basic only after measuring how long the spreadsheet takes. You may not need either subscription.

Pressure washer doing repeat driveway and house washes: If each quote follows a similar surface-area formula, start with our free pressure washing worksheet. If repeat scheduling, reminders and payment tracking become the bottleneck, run the five-job trial with recurring and one-off work.

Solo operator tracking material margin: Compare the entry-level job-cost view in Housecall Pro with the higher Jobber tier that actually offers job costing. Do not infer that a lower-tier Jobber report is a full job-costing substitute; verify line-item cost treatment and exports.

Seven checks before paying either vendor

  • Use the exact user count and industry category you will purchase under; some Housecall Pro pricing differs by industry.
  • Compare regular renewal amounts, not a temporary first-month promotion.
  • Check whether annual pricing is prepaid and whether a commitment survives cancellation.
  • Check card-processing, bank-transfer and instant-payout fees against your expected invoice mix.
  • Verify QuickBooks or other accounting sync on the chosen tier and ask how duplicate records are handled.
  • Test customer data export, invoice history and cancellation steps before entering live business records.
  • Write down what task the paid software will replace and a measurable time or error-reduction target.
