Solo contractor software costs
Is QuoteIQ worth $29.99 a month for a one-person business?
Use a break-even calculation and a five-job trial to decide whether paying for quoting and invoicing software is justified by your own workflow.
Calculate the break-even point
Required monthly minutes saved = (monthly subscription price ÷ productive value per hour) × 60. Replace the assumed hourly value with a realistic figure for your business. Minutes you cannot turn into productive work may be worth less than your billing rate.
| Regular month-to-month plan | Monthly fee | Minutes per month at $40/hour | Minutes per job (20 jobs) | Minutes per job (40 jobs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| QuoteIQ Essentials (1 user) | $29.99 | 45.0 | 2.25 | 1.12 |
| Jobber Core (1 user) | $49.00 | 73.5 | 3.68 | 1.84 |
At $25 per productive hour, the monthly thresholds rise to about 72 minutes for QuoteIQ Essentials and 118 minutes for Jobber Core. These are illustrations, not a feature-equivalent comparison or a promise of savings.
What is included in the price?
QuoteIQ's September 30–October 5, 2026 update lists Essentials at $29.99 monthly or $299.99 annually, with one user, 25 GB File Manager storage and 500 monthly IQ Credits. Its product pages describe estimating, invoices and scheduling, but available features and credit usage should be checked in the live plan and trial before relying on them.
Jobber's official pricing page lists one-user Core at a regular $49 monthly without a commitment, or $29 monthly equivalent billed annually. Its advertised temporary discounts are excluded here. The two products' workflows and feature gates are not identical.
Annual billing changes the cash commitment: $299.99 paid up front for QuoteIQ Essentials versus $348 for Jobber Core at the published $29 monthly equivalent. Do not compare annual-equivalent pricing with no-commitment monthly rates as though the terms match.
Where can the minutes actually come from?
Time the steps you already perform: preparing an estimate, revising an appointment, converting an approved quote to an invoice, following up on a late payment and finding a previous customer's job. A product is useful only if the full process is faster and reliable on the phone you actually carry.
Do not assume an advertised feature is available in the entry tier. For example, if QuickBooks Online synchronization is required, compare the actual tiers offering it and verify the supported records, sync direction and separate accounting-software costs. QuoteIQ's October update lists Pro at $199.99 monthly; Jobber lists QuickBooks Online synchronization on Connect. These tiers are not directly equivalent.
Five-job trial scorecard
Use fictional customers and jobs to avoid entering private customer information during evaluation. Run the same tests in each product:
- Prepare a detailed estimate with labor, materials, tax and a deposit.
- Convert an accepted estimate to an invoice; inspect the payment workflow.
- Reschedule a job and check the customer-facing notification.
- Locate customer history and send a follow-up.
- Export records; test accounting synchronization only if the tier explicitly includes it.
For every task, record elapsed minutes, taps, mistakes, missing features, surprise fees and whether the workflow fits your trade. Use our software-trial checklist →
When free tools are still the right choice
If a calendar, estimate template and invoicing process already work without dropped jobs or repeated entry, keep them. A subscription can introduce configuration, training and recurring expense. The best choice is the least complicated system that reliably handles your work. Read the free-vs-paid decision guide →
Check vendor prices before deciding
Some older QuoteIQ product pages still display superseded prices for higher tiers. This guide uses its October 2026 plan update for the current tier schedule, and excludes temporary Jobber promotions. Always verify the actual checkout, renewal, cancellation, user limits, payment-processing charges and add-ons before paying.
